(222) 32 23 42On the Epidemiological Situation of Dengue Fever in Bangladesh in 2026
The Ministry of Health reports that a sharp rise in dengue fever cases was registered in the People's Republic of Bangladesh in early September 2026.
Dengue fever is endemic in Bangladesh.
This year, a large-scale outbreak of the infection has been recorded among the population. The situation is aggravated by the climate, as current weather conditions are ideal for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, which carry the virus.
For reference:
The main vectors of dengue fever are Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and, less often, Aedes albopictus. The vectors live not only in swamps and wild jungles but also in containers with standing water (flower pot trays, car tyres, puddles, open tanks on roofs or near homes). The vectors are active at any time of day.
The threat is expected to remain relevant until October this year. According to expert estimates, the number of hospitalizations in September may exceed 30,000. Since the beginning of the year, about 42,000 patients have been hospitalized and 117 have died.
Since the beginning of 2026, about 1.4 million cases of dengue fever have been registered worldwide in 68 countries. Most cases occurred in Latin America (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador) and in South and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India, Cambodia, Thailand, the Maldives). According to travel health reports, the Maldives had reported 2,969 cases since the beginning of the year as of June 1, 2026; Sri Lanka had reported 47,530 cases and 29 deaths as of June 22, 2026; and Samoa (South Pacific) had reported 19,764 confirmed cases and 9 deaths since January 2025.
Dengue fever cannot spread in the Republic of Belarus because there are no favorable conditions for the main vectors to live and breed. However, the disease may be imported by travelers arriving from endemic countries. The number of imported cases of dengue fever ranged from 8 in 2024 to 4 in 2026. The disease is not transmitted from person to person and has no epidemic potential in the Republic of Belarus.
The Ministry of Health advises travelers to take precautions when going abroad. You can read them on our website (in Russian).
